One of the Second World War's most enduring conspiracy theories has been laid to rest after Polish investigators probing the mysterious death of the country's wartime leader, General Wladyslaw Sikorski, concluded that there was no evidence of foul play when he died in a plane crash.

Forensic experts in the Polish city of Krakow said that all the evidence from a post mortem on the general's remains indicated that he had died from "trauma to internal organs caused by an accident".

Investigators also revealed that the general had a fractured eye socket, broken ribs, a shattered thigh bone, and that they had found a splinter of wood embedded in his skull.

They added that they had discovered no evidence of injuries sustained before the Polish leader's RAF Liberator plunged into the sea, just seconds after taking off from Gibraltar in July in 1943.

The lack of evidence of foul play scotches enduring and colourful conspiracy theories that Gen Sikorski had died at the hands of Russian, or even British, agents, who may have strangled or shot him before the Liberator took off.

With a cast list including Stalin, Churchill, the KGB spy Kim Philby and the actor Anthony Quayle, the conspiracy theories had shown such persistence that last year Poland launched a criminal investigation into the accident in attempt to discover the truth.

In November investigators exhumed the general's remains from their resting place in a Krakow cathedral.

DNA tests also found that the bones were almost certainly those of Gen Sikorski, so undermining another conspiracy theory - that he may have been kidnapped and that the body found on the plane was not that of the general's.

"We are 99.2 per cent certain that the remains are those of General Sikorski," said Dr Tomasz Kupiec, one of the investigating scientists.
