One day I was in Flying Control when we heard what was obviously a large aircraft circling overhead. It was a Short Stirling, a four-engined monster which none of us had actually seen before, but of course were able to recognise as we were required to keep up to date with our Aircraft Recognition. The pilot obviously wished to land and the Airfield Control officer gave it a 'green' with an Aldis lamp. The Stirling landed, beautifully, I must say, and taxied round to just outside Flying Control. Most of us dashed outside to get a closer look and watched the front hatch open and a ladder lowered. A rather short figure in full flying kit descended, removed its flying helmet to display sholuder-length golden hair. It was a girl! We waited for the rest of the crew to appear, to no avail. The petite blonde was the crew! She explained that she was a member of the Air Transport Auxiliary and had flown most types of aircraft, and could we please supply her with lunch? This, of course, we were pleased to do. After lunch the young lady said that she had half an hour to spare and could she possibly have a game of snooker? Our Mess expert said that he would be delighted to give her a game, but he wasnot so delighted when she absolutely thrashed him. Having thanked us for entertaining her, the glamourous pilot went back to her aircraft, took off and beat us up as if she were flying a Spitfire. And I didn't even get her name!

Oh I would have loved to have seen the look on their faces!!!

I reckon. Classic stuff. I wonder if she picked a different airfield each time she decided to "rumble" the locals?!
