Originally when I saw War Office ... it didn't occur to me he might be a soldier !! I thought he just worked at the War Office ! His brother ( the one I'm researching ) was 37 - so there's a big difference in ages ( which is not uncommon of course ! ) !! so does it seem right to you ? ..... I'm dithering I'm not sure !!
Am I right in thinking he is the brother of Fr Hubert Furlong? Don't make it easy, do you. I can't even find Hubert's birth, although there are plenty of Herberts, including one in Epping in 1892. What is the sister's name? Alternatively, just send me the image, it might be quicker.
Nothing ever comes easy to me .... you know that !! I've sent it to you ! .... but you'll see theres nothing else there ... honest !!!!!! Plus Hubert could be his Franciscan name ! ... some of them used their own names but some used their Franciscan names !
Hubert must be his ecclesiastical name. Possible for his sister: William George Machell married Mary Jane Furlong (or Emily Nicholls ) Sept Qu. 1896, West Ham Reg District. They are still in West Ham in 1911. This is possibly the family: William b 1871 Mary b 1873 Eileen Mary b1901 Bernard Walter b 1905 I think Walter is probably a Civil Servant. The F4 may be a department reference, but I can't find anything.
How about Angelo Patrick Furlong for Hubert's real name? No, can't be him, he married in Sept 1918 it seems
Annie Yes, the List only has intials. In the December 1917 edition he is shown as Lt D W Furlong MC, Royal Berkshire Regiment, seniority from 6 October 1916. I hope that this helps you. Gareth
Annie, I think I may have cracked it. If you have some nice, kind friends that can still afford Ancestry, it will help. It's the same family I was looking at last night in the 1881 census. Now I've matched all the birth dates and found a few marriages and deaths, Hubert could possibly be William Michael Furlong, born Poplar, June Qu. 1879. Walter is missing from the household, but I think he is the eldest son, born 1866. Take a look at RG11 0488/83 Page 27. Head of household is Walter Furlong, born 1829 Ireland.
Phil ... you are the BOMB !!!!! Thank you so much - that's wonderful !! Now ... who can I ask ?? Annie
I've got a large amount of illegible notes on that family, mostly BMDs sitting here including: 1901 census. Walter William Furlong, age 35, born Bow, resident Kingston-Upon-Thames, Civil Servant. Still there in 1911. 1911 census. Hubert Furlong, age 34, Long Ashton, Somerset.
There is a Friary at Clevedon Somerset ! Do you think you could sent me that stuff Phil and I'll see if I can get some answers later when it's calmed down a bit around here .... how come people want to eat when I'm in the middle of something interesting ?? Thanks for all your hard work ..... I'll help you when you need it too !!
Clevedon is in Long Ashton Registration District, so looks good. http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/Reg/districts/long%20ashton.html
I thought you might have blitzed another forum. Let me know any bits you can't de-cypher. There are three of them that I can't trace, who may have taken up the cloth/veil: Anna Maria,Francis and William.
