Mark William Phillips held a dual commission. He was a Lt Col in the artillery and ended up a Major Gen in the army. He was instrumental in bringing up the guns at a rapid rate at Minden( while Sackville sat on his butt). In the AWI, he was second in command to Burgoyne on that illfated campaign. After exchange he commanded a small army in VA and chased Von Steuben out of Petersburg. Unfortunately he got sick and died at Petersburg. I believe he is the only artillery officer to have commanded a British army. YMH & OS, Ben Newton Capt Lt RA(1776-1783) 0)
Ben, Thanks for the information. I agree that he may have been "the only artillery officer to have commanded a British army", and certainly cannot think of another. Best wishes, Mark
